Alexander Fang

Biography


Alexander Fang, age 24, will be continuing his second year of a Master of Music in piano performance with Sharon Mann and Yoshikazu Nagai at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He studied with James Giles and Alan Chow during his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, where he also completed a BA/MS in computer science. He received the alternate winner prize in the MTNA’s Young Artist Performance Piano competition in the Illinois state division in 2019. He has participated and received prizes in the United States Open Music Competition; in 2013 he won first prizes for solo piano and chamber, and was selected as a Grand Winner after performing in the Winner’s Concert. Alexander is an avid chamber musician, constantly performing chamber music throughout his graduate, undergraduate, and summer studies.

Alexander has attended summer music festivals including the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival (2021), Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival (2018), Orford Academy (2016, 2018), Bowdoin International Music Festival (2015, 2016), New Orleans Piano Institute (2014) where he was selected as a scholarship recipient, and International Music Festival in Siena (2013). In these festivals, he has studied and taken masterclasses with faculty including Jerome Lowenthal, Ursula Oppens, Andre Laplante, Yong Hi Moon, and Julian Martin. Outside of festivals, he has performed in masterclasses led by Garrick Ohlsson, Kirill Gerstein, Jeremy Denk, Steven Spooner, and the Dover Quartet.
