Nicholas Mathew

Biography

Nicholas Mathew is Professor of Music and Richard and Rhonda Goldman Professor of the Arts and Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley. Born in England, he studied at Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music before relocating to the United States, where he worked with the renowned early piano specialist Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University. He has since performed on both early and modern pianos across the United States, Europe, and Australia. One of the world’s leading authorities on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century music, especially the music of Beethoven and Haydn, he is a widely published author and critic, as well as a pianist and fortepianist.
