Jens Peter Maintz Violoncello
Since winning the First Prize in the Violoncello category of the ARD (German public radio-TV) Competition in 1994, which had not been awarded for 17 years, Jens Peter Maintz belongs to the leading cellists of his generation.
Born 1967 in Hamburg, Jens Peter Maintz studied with David Geringas and received further artistic growth in master classes with Heinrich Schiff, Frans Helmerson, Boris Pergamenschikow and Siegfried Palm.
His concerto repertoire includes works of all periods from Baroque to the newest contemporary works.
Since 1995, Maintz has been principal cellist of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin, under Kent Nagano. In 1998 the Trio Fontenay welcomed him as their new cellist.
As a soloist and chamber musician, he has toured in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Poland, Spain, South America, and in the USA. He has, among others, performed together with the Residentie Orkest Den Haag under Frans Welser Möst, the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle in Bonn under Dennis Russell Davies, the Symphony Orchestra of South German Radio, the Philharmonic State Orchestra in Hamburg under Gerd Albrecht, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin, under Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marek Janowski and Herbert Blomstedt.
In December 2003, Jens Peter Maintz was the soloist of the first German performance of Richard Danielpour’s Cello Concerto No. 1 at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, accompanied by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin, conducted by Herbert Blomstedt.
The skill of this young cellist is documented on various CD recordings. A Sony Classical recording with works of J. S. Bach, Dutilleux and Kodàly was awarded the ECHO Prize in 1997 for the best solo recording of the year.
Future CD releases include a recording of Isang Yun’s cello concerto with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin, for Capriccio records and for Arte Nova records a recording of Tchaikovsky’s works for cello and orchestra accompanied by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra conducted by David Geringas.
Jens Peter Maintz plays a Vincenzo Ruggeri Violoncello of 1696.
