Forest Hill Garden Club
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: With drums pounding and lions leaping, the Cherng Loong Lion Dancers helped us celebrate the passing of “The Year of the Rat” and the arrival of “The year of the Ox.” The Clubhouse was filled with more than a hundred neighbors, young and old, enthralled with the greetings of our first annual: Lunar New Years “ with fun and revelry. All of us were charmed by the delicate playing of the classical Chinese harp called Gu Zheng from the Alice Fung Yu’s Middle School. Thank you, Dan Kelly, for contracting these marvelous players. Our flavorful dim sum won good reviews thanks to Bob and Lonnie Wong for arranging with City View Restaurant to cater our party. We had ample tastings of pork buns, and other rice-wrapped favorites to sample. Our two roasted pigs, selected by Lillian Kwok, were the perfect finish to our delicious food service. Our party wouldn’t have been complete without the artful decorations of Anna Cristoforo, Eva Monroe and Helen Scholten who defined our theme with their arrangements and provided us with a classical Asian Atmosphere. The entire committee helped with the clean up so the job was completed with efficiency and speed. Many thanks to Will Connolly for providing us with a state-of-the-art sound system. A great thank you goes to the Forest Hill Association for funding the event, and to Bob Wong, former FHA board president, for chairing it. St. Patrick’s Day Party: Back by popular demand, this party will be Monday, March 16 (Tuesday was vetoed by higher authority), at 6:30 P.M. Cocktails will be followed by the traditional St. Patrick’s Day fare of corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, soda bread, and Irish Coffee—a San Francisco treat. Incidentally, when the immigrant ships landed, they sold off the remaining stores—typically salted-beef. The poor immigrants would buy the stores, and remove the salt from the beef by boiling it with cabbage. The salt-laden cabbage would then be discarded. Modern refrigeration and other advances have made the cabbage part of the meal. Irish Coffee was concocted by the late Chronicle columnist, Stanton Delaplane, supposedly while delayed at Shannon Airport. In addition to the fabulous cuisine, Will Connolly, an honored guest, will provide a musical programme. Cost for this fabulous event? Garden Club members, $10. Spouses and guests are $15. What a bargain! Last year, it sold out early. RSVP to Dottie McHugh (681-5750). Make check payable to Forest Hill Garden Club and mail to Dottie McHugh 368 Pacheco Street. If you can help with setup, decorations, shopping (bar), drink tickets, bartending, coordinating the kitchen, Irish coffee, appetizers, desserts, and/or cleanup, please contact Dottie. |
